Sergeant Darrell Eaton and Officer Brian Cashman each recently received an “Act of Bravery Award” from the Maine Chiefs of Police Association at their Awards Dinner on Friday night, February 9th.
On Christmas night, Sgt. Eaton and Ofc. Cashman responded to a report of a despondent man armed with a shotgun. The man had threatened to kill himself and anyone who came to try and help him. As the officers arrived, the armed subject fled into a heavily wooded area and fired a shot. The officers tracked the subject through the woods, located him about an hour later, and spent the next two hours attempting to negotiate a peaceful surrender, while maneuvering as close as they were able. When the subject raised the shotgun and placed it under his own chin, Ofc. Cashman was able to use his taser and take him into custody without further incident.
Sgt. Eaton and Ofc. Cashman brought this incident to a successful conclusion despite facing an imminent threat from an armed man and enduring frigid winter conditions. We’re proud to have officers like them protecting our town!
