On Wednesday, January 17, KPD Officer Candice Simeoni testified at a Senate Aging Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., chaired by Maine Sen. Susan Collins. The hearing was called “Fighting Elder Fraud: Progress Made, Work to be Done." Simeoni explained how she has worked to combat elder abuse over her 15-year career in law enforcement. She also founded the York County Elder Abuse Task Force in 2005 when she recognized that a multidisciplinary approach was needed to address the epidemic of scams.
Maine is the oldest state in the country, with 20 percent of Mainers over the age of 65. In Kennebunk, that number is even higher at thirty-five percent.
